The Brad Cox trainee rolled to a 4 ¼ length win in the Southwest in his first start since winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) last November at Keeneland. The colt is now the 8-1 favorite in early Kentucky Derby wagering odds at BUSR.

The colt earned a career best Beyer Speed Figure of 96, topping the 95 he earned in his Breeders’ Cup Juvenile victory.

Cox has not had a starter in the Kentucky Derby but is locked and loaded this year. In addition to Essential Quality he has Smarty Jones winner Caddo River and Mandaloun, winner of the Risen Star (G2) at Fair Grounds.

Essential Quality came out of the Southwest in good order and his next race is still not decided. The colt is currently third in the Road to the Kentucky Derby points standings with 40.

“We’ll get with the Godolphin team, Jimmy Bell and Dan Pride, and come up with a plan,” Cox said. “I’d have to say either the Blue Grass or the Arkansas Derby. That’s about the only thing, really, that makes sense. If something happens as far as weather goes, I guess you could probably look at the Florida Derby. But in this region of the country, I think the most logical spot would be the Arkansas Derby or the Blue Grass.”

The Beyer boys adjusted the figure, and it is now 89. The colt seemed to not be taking a hold of the racetrack heading down the backstretch and did not like the kick back, but once Jose Ortiz got him going around the far turn I thought he finished up well and gives the impression he will get better with more ground and perhaps a switch to a different surface than Gulfstream Park might move him forward as well.

“I knew we were in trouble. I was kind of waiting to see how it unfolded. You know, I’m not one to give up until it’s time to give up. I knew things weren’t going the way we wanted them to go,” McGaughey said. “They weren’t going that fast in front of us. I saw what was happening and I felt like if we could get him to the outside, we’d have a chance. That’s exactly what happened.”

McGaughey has marked the Florida Derby (G1) on March 27 as the final prep for the colt, who is now sitting atop the Road to the Kentucky Derby points standings with 60.
